Modern technology is something that leaves everyone in awe especially at the pace at which it is developing. While lots of modern machinery and technology are indeed pretty complicated, you can eventually understand the sensibility in some of them especially when you weed out the intricacies. The construction crane is one such machine. It simply employs three simple machines- the lever, the hydraulic cylinder and the pulley. Calgary construction companies offer you quality cranes, whose mechanism is examined as follows.

Most cranes more or less use the lever for the purpose of lifting exceptionally large and heavy loads. Many balanced cranes and almost all the mounted cranes maximize their lifting capacity with the help of the lever. The cranes use these mechanical arms or levers to increase their strength. A complex system of chains, ropes and pulleys typically accompanies the mechanical arm. However, the lever itself is a simple but highly useful machine.

The lever has been put in practice right since the ancient times to construct large monuments, temples and fortifications. Some scholars even theorize that the Great Pyramids were constructed with the help of crane levers. However, most historians attribute the geometric theory behind the development of the lever to Archimedes of 3rd century BCE. His famous saying that he can move the earth with a lever with simply a place to stand shows the importance of the lever.

The crane lever is a stable bar resting on its fulcrum which is nothing but a pivot point. One can press down at one end with some force or ‘effort’ to produce the resulting ‘work’ force at the other end. This work force typically holds or carries the object which is to be lifted by a crane. In a crane, along with the hydraulic cylinder and the pulley, the lever manipulates the torque. The concept of torque is that it measures the distance or length over which the force is applied. In mathematical terms, torque is equal to force times distance.

Archimedes also theorizes that manipulating torque can provide greater lifting capacities. For instance, consider a simple seesaw at a play ground. A 10 foot long see-saw pivots on the bar directly at the centre of its board. A bigger person obviously pushes their side of the seesaw onto the ground and the smaller person has to apply extra force to even balance out the seesaw. However, if the smaller person somehow extends his side of the seesaw by a few more feet, they would also be able to level the weight of the bigger one. This is how the lever of a crane works. In simple words, the greater you spread the effort force across greater distances, the lesser is the effort force required to make the lift.

Thus, crane levers actually help hundreds of construction workers, engineers and architects who need to lift gigantic loads on a day to day basis. Calgary has a few good and reliable crane companies that provide you with cranes of numerous functions to suit all your lifting needs.
